How do I write an AI prompt that produces a useful answer?

A useful prompt gives the model enough context to make the right decisions without burying the task in unnecessary instructions. You do not need magic wording. You need a clear outcome, relevant background, important constraints, and a definition of what a good result looks like.

Start with the task in one sentence. “Write a launch plan” is vague. “Write a seven-day launch plan for a bookkeeping service aimed at UK freelancers” gives the model a concrete job. Then add only the context that changes the answer: the audience, current situation, available resources, deadline, and known limitations.

State constraints as observable rules. Instead of “make it good,” say “keep it under 500 words, use plain English, include the owner and deadline for every action, and do not invent budget figures.” This reduces ambiguity and makes the output easier to review. If a particular fact is unknown, tell the model to mark it as unknown rather than guess.

Specify the output shape when structure matters. Ask for a table when you need comparison, a checklist when you need execution, or a short recommendation followed by evidence when you need a decision. Do not demand elaborate formatting merely because it looks impressive. The format should help you use the answer.

For complex work, ask for assumptions before the final answer. A strong sequence is: identify missing information, state bounded assumptions, produce the result, then list the highest-risk uncertainty. You can also provide one short example of the desired style, but avoid examples so specific that the model simply copies them.

Finally, treat the first response as a draft. Correct factual errors, add missing context, and ask for a focused revision. Iteration is most effective when feedback is precise: “The plan ignores customer support capacity; revise days four through seven using a maximum of two staff hours per day.”
